In the Land of Cameras

It is not secret that Luke is a photographer at heart. Our first camera as a married couple, essentially a nicer point and shoot, brought out a side of Luke that I had never seen. He sat and studied the manual for that camera. While in Europe for our belated honeymoon he took pictures that we now have hanging on our wall, and not just in the “oh we loved that vacation” capacity. We did love that vacation, but the shots he captured there were amazing. Amazing for a man who had never studied or even shown interest in photography.

Suddenly I went from being married to man without a major hobby to being married to photographer. A man who notices colors, textures and the feel of his surroundings. A man that wishes his camera were with him always. Just in case. A man who drools over very expensive equipment and saves for new lenses better camera bodies and tripods and who build gigantic light boxes in the basement to take better photos of random things.

This, or course, has paid off for me tenfold. My walls are covered with beautiful artwork. My blog has beautiful photos of meals I just had to share and moments I don’t ever want to forget. I also have quite the collection of photographs of my heart. You know, my blond haired, blue-eyed heart that walks around outside of my body singing “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and spouting off information about trains and dinosaurs. Never once have we gone to a photographer for photos. There has never been a need.

Needless to say we have a nice camera setup around here. I’ve used my Luke’s camera and lenses to take numerous shots for Evolving Mommy and Evolving Mommy reviews, but always around the house. The camera that I usually resorted to using while out and about or even on the fly around the house is the camera on my phone. Our first camera as a married couple? You know that “point and shoot”? Well, in 2006 it was pretty nice and pretty small for what it could do. In 2010 it was just a gigantic camera to lug around in my purse or to the park. It also eats through batteries.

Because of this I have been lusting over cameras for quite some time. Cute little point and shoot cameras that would still get me good shots while easily living within my reach at all times. I thought I had been doing it secretly, or at least discreetly, but apparently that was not the case. Because on Christmas morning I opened up small box with a beautiful little black Canon PowerShot inside. I cried. Seriously people. I cried.

I love my husband.

I’ve been snapping pictures everywhere I go. This baby is small, lightweight has a large screen and is easy to use all while having the ability for more technical settings. I am on cloud nine.

You know who else is on cloud nine? This little girl who also woke up Christmas morning to find her very own digital camera under the tree.

I haven’t taken a peek yet at the photos on her camera, but from watching her flit around every room she is in taking pictures of everything, it is safe to say we have a lot of pictures of walls, kitchen cabinets and my mid section interspersed with pictures of trains, Christmas gifts and family members. I know there is a picture on her cute little camera of me taking a picture of her with my cute little camera.

Maddy has always loved taking pictures with Luke’s cameras and Luke has always been very supportive of her interest. Well, as supportive as you can be when your daughter taking pictures means she is holding your very expensive and fairly weighty camera in her hands.

Now he doesn’t really have to worry about either of us touching his stuff. But he will have to worry about being the subject of a lot more photos.

Oh, and yes we are highly entertained with taking pictures of each other taking pictures of each other. Etc, etc, and so forth round and round and round.
