There are so many things I want to learn how to do. How to make a soufflé, sew more than a plain curtain panel, knit, speak another language, parallel park. You know all sorts of special things. I love taking classes and learning new things. Unfortunately, I don’t usually have a lot of time to take classes. Well, more specifically I don’t have time to take classes when they are offered.
Dear city I live in,
People with kids like to take cooking and crafting classes too. Please stop scheduling everything in the middle of the day- I am not a senior citizen with copious amounts of kid-free daytime hours. Or right at dinner/bath/book/bedtime – I have children and a husband who likes it when I’m around to tag-team our rascally duo and their nighttime routine.

So what’s a mom like me to do? Well, up until a couple of weeks ago I was pretty sure I was going to miss out on picking up new skills unless I could trick an unsuspecting grandma, craft store clerk or chef to coming to my house during the day while Delaney naps to teach me all the thing I so want to know. Then I learned that Craftsy isn’t just a forum for already crafty people to show off all their already awesome crafts. It is that, but much more too. There are marketplaces for patterns and supplies, areas to share your latest and greatest projects with other crafty people, and classes. Classes of all kinds! Classes to learn cooking techniques or recipes, knitting, sewing, photography, cake decorating and more. Each class is filmed in Denver and taught by an instructor who really knows their stuff. Classes are generally a few hours long and since they are online and on-demand that means even busy moms can take classes too! Hooray!
I wish I would have known about this sooner. I’ve developed quite the list of Craftsy classes I would like to take. Everything from basic sewing and knitting to Artisan Cheese Making and French Home Cooking. There are even some free classes to try out. Look out world I am going to learn so much! With the exception of parallel parking, there doesn’t seem to be a Craftsy class for that.
I know I sound pretty excited because I am. As a busy mom it’s hard to find time for myself. Time to focus on my needs and take a little breather from the normal demands of my day. I run when I can for a mental break, I write here on Evolving Motherhood, but honestly sometimes I want something a little different. I’ve learned that I need time away from motherhood now and then. Me time, even if it’s just me in my kitchen by myself learning a new cooking technique- is one of the most exciting things I can get.
