Bread Challenge Week 42
Way back in January when I decided to challenge myself to make a new bread recipe every week and to try types of bread that I had not had or had not thought to bake at home I asked for suggestions from all of you. I had a list of ideas already but I needed breads to fill my year with bread. I also knew you were likely to think of lots of breads that my mind had missed. This week I made Brioche. I can say Brioche might have slipped my mind if it were,’t for a suggestion from one of you. Thank you for the suggestion.
I decided to make Whole Wheat Brioche from Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day, by Zoe Francois and Jeff Hertzberg. Maddy and I had friends over to play Friday so I took the opportunity to make brioche. It was a hit. Sweet Buttery. Soft. Oh, so good. Two adult women and two toddlers ate a half a loaf within 30 minutes of pulling it out of the oven.
The bread took a while to make. That is always a down side. With rising, baking, refrigerating and mixing my loaf of brioche took seven hours from start to finish, but to be honest I let the dough refrigerate over night so it really only took 5 hours of awake time with all but 15 minutes being baking and rising.
Egg wash gave this loaf a beautifully browned top. The sweet and buttery flavor makes for more of a dessert taste than other breads. We definitely felt like we were eating a treat. Will I make it again? I want to say yes yes yes but honestly it is more of a treat that doesn’t fir in with my daily needs. Maybe I’ll just keep it in mind for coffee dates with my girl friends or when we have guests over.
Either way you should try this bread. Yum. Don’t be too jealous but I’ll be using the remaining dough to try out the Indian Spiced Doughnut recipe from the same book too, hopefully they will be delicious and we’ll get two yummy treats out of one dough recipe. I’ll let you know how our doughnuts turn out next week.
