Bread Challenge Week 31
I have mentioned before that batter breads are a busy cooks best friend. Beer batter bread is a busy cooks best friend forever.
Beer bread is a batter bread that partially uses the yeast in the beer along with baking powder to make a loaf of bread less like say, banana bread and more like a sandwich loaf. I must note that I have yet to make a beer batter loaf that is well suited for sandwiches, but I haven’t met a beer bread I didn’t like. The beer in the bread gives a nice tang or sour dough flavor to the loaf that usually only comes with hours of rising and bread starters.
I’ll admit it I intentionally looked for a whole wheat beer bread recipe. You know I am a fan of whole wheat. Peanut Butter Boy’s Whole Grain Beer Bread was just what I was looking for. Simple. Quick. Whole grain.
This recipe did not disappoint. I decided to included the optional cheddar cheese and chives, because who doesn’t like cheese and chives. My baking sous chef Madeline helped me whip up this bread and we had a blast. This bread was a great bread to have baking as our big pot of jambalaya was cooking.
The beer bread took a little less than an hour and 15 minutes from start to buttered and bitten. As I mentioned above this loaf is not exactly a sandwich bread although it may work well as a base for a grilled cheese. I would suggest using this bread for a side to a bowl of soup or toasted with a plate of scrambled eggs. I recommend making this bread if you are short on time but in need of a loaf of bread with good flavor, moist dense crumb and crunch crust. The recipe is easy to follow and consists of easy to find household ingredients. I plan to make this bread again and play with additional ingredients such as sun-dried tomatoes and feta cheese or garlic and herb or maybe just a different type of beer. Yum.
