Bread Challenge Week 44
Baking with the girls is always fun. Their enthusiasm for baking actually matches mine, which makes baking something more than just a normal task. It makes it an event. Scones have been on my to make list since this baking extravaganza started almost a year ago. It’s not that I hadn’t made scones before it’s just that I hadn’t actually followed a recipe. I have a habit of tweaking things as I bake. One of points of this bread challenge was to make myself follow recipes and learn from them in the process.
We decided to follow a small batch recipe so that we wouldn’t end up with a billion scones. More specifically a billion scones that I would feel very much obligated to eat. Chocolate Chip Cream Scones recipe from Small Batch Baking, by Debbie Maugans Nakos, was just what we were looking for. The recipe said it made three scones with for one Mom and 2 little ladies was perfect. The girls helped add ingredients, mix and form the dough. Then they help sprinkle the sugar on top, which was by all indications their favorite part.
The recipe was easy to follow and was made up of mostly of normal household ingredients. The only ingredient that was not a usual thing to fin in my refrigerator was the cream. Luckily we just so happened to have cream on hand from making Chicken Quesadilla Pasta a couple days earlier. After about 20 minutes of hands on time we were ready to bake our scones. It would have taken 10 minute or less hands on time for just me on my own but little hands make some tasks take a bit longer. The scones took about 20 minutes to bake and came out a lovely light golden brown.
They were sweet and moist with just the right amount of crumbly texture. The girls and I dove into them while they were still warm from the oven and we loved them. at the last minute while we were forming the dough I decided to cut the dough round into six pieces instead of three. I’m glad I did because the smaller scones were the perfect size for us. If I make this recipe again I will absolutely do the same. The smaller size gave us a nice taste of the chocolate chip goodness without overdoing it. Make these. They are a yummy treat, even if they are not all that healthy.

This seems right up my alley, chocolate chips and 10 minutes prep time. My kids would love making these with me.
Wow my mouth is watering just reading this post. Chocolate is really a great food :).
Good stuff! I travelled to England this summer and had some afternoon tea and scones, and it was absolutely delicious I decided to try and make my own last weekend. I might have broken a few rules maybe – I found a bunch of random scone recipes here and made 4 different types! My friends were so happy when I invited them round for tea and scones, complete with real whipped cream. Lots of fun!
