Bread Challenge Week 47
You know those foods that are basically carved into the menu for family gatherings? The ones that are required. 60 Minute Rolls are one of the many required items on my families Thanksgiving menu. Every year for as long as I can remember, and probably longer than that, these rolls have been a Thanksgiving staple. They are like a parker house roll in shape but with a nice layer of powder sugar icing it is more of a treat than a dinner roll. You know something I love about my family? A roll with icing on it is a perfectly acceptable dinner roll.
This year Maddy and I spent a day at my grandma’s house making pies and rolls in preparation for Thanksgiving. The name of the roll is 60-minute rolls, but it took us longer than that. More like an hour and a half. Well worth it I would say, especially since these rolls are a required food but also because all of the additional time was rising time.
These rolls are very light in color with a light golden color when they finish baking. Their soft, slightly chewy texture is great. I must tell you, warm right out of the oven with a little butter is also a spectacular way to eat these. These rolls require a biscuit cutter to attain their circular shape. The dough is so soft and wet that you have to use a lot of flour on your work surface and on the dough when you cut the rolls out to ensure that the dough doesn’t stick to everything.
Will I make these rolls again? I think it is pretty safe to say that yes these rolls are in my future. They are required after all, just like chocolate pudding pie, pumpkin pie and fruit salad. So yes I’ll make them again, but they are more of a special occasion roll in my opinion. For most meals, (i.e. not Thanksgiving) I would prefer a nice hearty whole wheat roll.
