Bread Challenge Week 15
While flipping through cookbooks this week I came across a whole wheat bread recipe baked in a slow cooker. Honestly baking bread in a slow cooker had never crossed my mind so I decided to give it a shot for the bread challenge this week. I followed the Honey Whole Grain Bread recipe from my Slow Cooker Recipes for All Occasions cookbook.
I was excited to try this bread out because it requires only 15 minutes of hands on time and then does all of its rising and baking in the crock pot all at once, which is handy to say the least. The recipe was easy to follow and I was looking forward to some yummy bread.
The bread smelled great while baking and up until about two-thirds of the way through the baking time everything looked to be going smoothly. I’d been checking on the bread throughout the cook time to make sure everything was okay and with about an hour left to bake I noticed that the top of the loaf had sunken in and fallen over the edge of the bread pan.
It is safe to say I will not be making this bread again. Even after following the directions to the letter this was a total bread-wreck, bread-fail and bread-tastrophe. We had to literally tear the bread apart just to get it out of the pan and then once we got it out of the pan we realized that it had not cooked all the way through on one side. Also I would rather not even talk about how much scrubbing the bread pan required.
I’m all for easy but this bread was a big waste of time, energy and ingredients. Have any of you ever successfully made bread on a slow cooker? If so I would love to hear about it.

I was curious about this one. Doesn’t sound good! I guess we won’t be making it.
It is a bummer because I tasted fine, well at least the little bit that was fully cooked did.
The reason the bread fell is because she kept checking it. You are not supposed to open the lid or fiddle with the bread until it has had sufficient time to bake completely. Opening the lid will change the temperature of the enclosure and cause the bread to fall. I make cockpot breat a LOT and never have this problem. But I leave it alone so it can do its thing.
Thanks for your feedback Linda. I did mention that I checked on the bread in the post above but I did not remove the lid just peeked through the glass. Can you think of another reason for it falling?
I have to say, the idea of slow cooker bread is kind of mind-blowing, and I’m bummed it didn’t work out, as it would be an amazing thing to be able to make and tell people about!
Yeah, Meagan, I was hoping to put slow cooker bread making on my resume. I guess I’ll have to figure out some other awesome skill to use.
I have heard there are tons of stuff you can make in the slow cooker. I even have a few slow cooker recipe books but I have never expanded past the regular dinner items. Bummer!
This was my first, and possibly last, foray into slow cooker baking. Bummer is right.
