We don’t watch TV much in our house. There are shows that we like but we generally watch them online (less commercial interruption). We do however really like the Today show. We like to hear bits of news while we are getting ready in the morning. This morning there was a very interesting story, you can find it at the Today Show if you would like to check it out.
We don’t usually pay too much attention to the details of the show we usually just let it be background noise and occasionally we pick up bits and pieces but when Robyn Okrant came on I couldn’t help but watch the entire interview. You see, Mrs. Okrant is living putting all of Oprah’s advice to work in her own life for an entire year. While watching the piece on the Today Show I was baffled to hear that a woman is devoting a year to following every piece of Oprah’s advice; everything from clothes to nutrition, and gadgets to personal outlooks. I was surprised that this woman is buying things that she can’t even use just because Oprah said it is a must have item. Because this all seemed so ridiculous to me I decided to check out Robin’s blog, Living Oprah, to see if I could get some more insight. I think Robin’s reasoning is interesting, and the scary thing is that I bet there are women all over this country that live as Oprah says and do what Oprah does but they don’t call it a social experiment. I do think that maybe Robin is looking for a way to get attention, but hey if that is her goal then I guess it is working for her.
Oprah is an icon in our society in so many ways. I bet that many of us have heard her give out advice that we thought was worth following. The question on my mind is this…Do you think that Oprah actually follows all of her advice, or does she have great writers that figure out these little pearls of wisdom for her? Also, Why do people feel the need to seek someone out to tell them how to live? What makes Oprah such an authority? What do you think?
