I also try to take a middle of the road approach. I took B out when he was 5 days old to the store and he was just fine. I never camped out inside unecessairly. Now if my kids are sick I have cancelled plans, definitely if there is a fever involved but if it is a cold that has passed but a runny nose or cough is lingering I will still take them out. Honestly good hand washing on your and your kids part is what makes the biggest difference about how often you get sick. I saw a piece of the Today show yesterday morning and the doctor said even on a airplane if you are sitting next to someone coughing if you get sick it is because you touched a surface they coughed on and then touched your mouth, nose, or eyes. Hard to get kids to keep their hands clean and stuff out of their mouth but reminded me that not getting sick is a lot more in my hands than anyone elses.
