Spring is so close. Can you feel it? We still have to make it through the last bits of snow that are sure to come in March and April in Colorado but spring is kind of in the air. So I have spring holidays and spring sights and sounds on the brain. Rainbows and flowers, Saint Patrick’s Day and Easter, rainy days and warm sunshine. I am so ready! The great thing about spring crafts and spring activities is so many of them work for spring in general and a holiday or two also. The Rainbow sorting activity below is a perfect example of this. It’s a great spring craft, although it would be fun any time of the year, yet it works as a Saint Patrick’s day craft also. It is great sorting and categorizing practice for kids too. Plus, it keeps kids busy forever! I love crafts and activities that are simple, educational, fun with results that make for lovely art on my walls. Especially when they keeps my kids busy.

If you would like to add even more Saint Patrick’s Day flair to this fun rainbow you could have kids make a big paper pot of gold to attach to the bottom of the rainbow.

This rainbow craft can be puled together quickly with whatever art and craft supplies and random colorful things you can find.

Supplies needed to make a Sorting Rainbow Craft

  • One large piece of plain construction paper
  • School glue
  • Assorted items in the colors of the rainbow (Anything crafty will do: yarn, fabric scraps, tissue paper, beads, feathers, confetti, stickers, pom-poms, stickers…)
  • A plastic baggie or bowl to hold all of the colorful things you found before you sort them.

How to: Sort the Rainbow – Hahahaha, I’m playing on a certain leprechaun’s words. Get it?

Step 1. Have your child sort out all the things in your bag or bowl into color categories, one for each color of the rainbow.

Step 2. Once everything is sorted start gluing down each group of colors individually starting by making a stripe of red objects down one side of the paper. Continue gluing the groups of objects into stripes down the paper in the order of a rainbow. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.

Step 3. Lay the completed rainbow flat to dry. Once it’s dry hang it and display the colorful project to give your house or classroom a bit of spring.
